Low Voltage Directive (2006/95/EC)

The Low Voltage Directive (LVD) 2006/95/EC applies to electrical equipment with a voltage rating between 50-1000 VAC or 75-1500 VDC.

There are exclusions to the types of equipment that come within the scope, in some cases due to the fact that other Directives apply to the specific type of equipment.

It's purpose is to ensure that electrical equipment does not endanger the safety of persons, domestic animals and property, when properly installed and maintained and used in applications for which it was made.

For a Manufacturer, the requirements of the Directive include:

- Assessing the design of your product against the safety objectives of the Directive. In practice this usually involves confirming that the product design complies with relevant harmonized standards, which may require some testing to be carried out.

- Creating technical documentation in accordance with specified requirements.

- Taking all necessary steps to ensure that products are manufactured in accordance with the technical information that has been created.

- Applying the CE Mark to the product, and issuing an EC Declaration of Conformity.

In the case of a Manufacturer located outside of the EU, the technical information must be held available from either an authorized representative inside the EU or by the person who places the product on the market inside the EU.
