For many organisations, the first time professional competency is questioned, or asked to be demonstrated, is in a court of law following an unfortunate incident. In many cases, competency assessment is only sought after such an event has occurred. Industry has stressed the need to assess the competency of those working in potentially explosive atmospheres.

In complying with ATEX 137 and DSEAR, employers and workplace owners must ensure competent personnel are employed to verify the safety of workplaces where explosive atmospheres may occur.
